Phonics Screening

Every June all year 1 children have to take part in a 'Phonics Screening Check'. This means children sit with their class teacher and read 40 words from the test book. 20 of these words are real, 20 are 'non-words' which are presented as alien names. To pass the test children must read at least 32 words correctly, although this number can change from year to year.

Children who do not pass the screening in year 1 will have to re-take the test when they are in year 2.

The screening is designed to help teachers identify children who need extra support with their phonics and reading.
